Road to full interoperability: Building the smart city of today

Forget the sci-fi visions of sprawling megalopolises filled with hyper-technological buildings and robotic citizens. The Smart City of today – and tomorrow – is evolving not through spectacle, but through smart, incremental improvements to existing systems, stronger collaboration across sectors, and people-first urban services.

Recent global trends and research continue to underscore this key principle: citizens must be at the heart of Smart City transformation. Urban development is no longer just a matter of infrastructure, it’s about co-designing solutions with communities, academia, businesses, and local governments.

From upgrading substandard housing and managing urban resources to addressing the climate emergency, public safety, and healthcare access, the challenges are complex and deeply interconnected. Technology can absolutely help, but the goal isn’t to reinvent the city overnight. Rather, progress comes from reinforcing what already works, extending existing infrastructure, and layering in digital services where they bring tangible value.

Smart Cities, then, are not a destination but a journey. Every decision – about technology, data standards, vendor partnerships, cybersecurity, etc. – shapes what a city can (or cannot) do in the future. This is why interoperability is no longer a technical buzzword, but a strategic imperative.

When cities adopt open, interoperable systems, they unlock real innovation. They foster agile ecosystems, avoid vendor lock-in, and ensure that new services can scale and evolve over time. Most importantly, they build inclusive, resilient urban environments where sustainability and human well-being go hand in hand.

The path ahead may not be flashy, but it’s wide open—and built for real progress.
