Any plan to go for Smart Streetlights? Don’t miss the opportunity to “WiFi” your poles

Smart #Streetlight, Streetlight Control, Intelligent Lighting, Outdoor Lighting Networks… all these address the same pains: reduce maintenance costs of City public lighting and improve safety in the streets, lower energy bills and related carbon footprint.

With light point controllers installed on top of each luminaire, wirelessly connected to a central streetlight maintenance and control system, some large projects proved to be pretty profitable for Cities, at least when equipped with LED technologies and professional outdoor lighting controllers, designed and manufactured by streetlight experts, such as Paradox Engineering. PE Smart Lighting Nodes control any kind of lamp through a standardized DALI interface with embedded programmable calendars and control programs. They measure energy, monitor current, power and voltage to identify technical problems and generate events which are automatically turned into optimized work orders to fix issues within the commitments of the service level agreement.

But what a pity to climb on top of each one of your thousands of poles to install a piece of electronic and finally get a #wireless network that transports only few dozens of bytes per second! What a pity to have a power-supplied pole every 30 meters in each of your streets and not leverage this asset to build a secured multi-application wireless network for critical City services, the police, civil officers as well as citizens!

Paradox Engineering has developed an unparalleled Smart Streetlight/City solution: each PE Smart Lighting Node connects street lamps to PE Smart Urban Network platform, supporting both a standard-based wireless IoT mesh network and a broadband WiFi network. Quite a challenge to leverage streetlight poles to provide connections from devices to secured local cloud, from devices to public cloud, from devices to devices and from people to the internet, with multiple isolated and secured communication channels. Lots of suppliers of devices connected to slow wireless network (e.g. weightless, sigfox, LoRa) claim to provide #smartcity systems but they can only provide a mono-directional communication pipeline of few bytes per second and no ability to provide device-to-device communication. This may be an acceptable solution to connect a few environmental sensors, but certainly not to provide a wireless backbone to the Smart City everybody expects.

Our PE Smart Urban Network provides a secured network with a minimum of 100 kilobits per second for IoT devices and dozen of megabytes for WiFi connections. Thanks to PE Smart Urban Network, Cities can leverage their streetlight poles to create a urban wireless infrastructure to control streetlights, connect and monitor traffic lights, count vehicle transit, identify free parking spots in real time, connect any kind of sensor (e.g. noise, presence, tilt, environmental), and even provide secured WiFi internet access, control videosurveillance cameras anywhere in the City. With PE Smart Urban Network, Cities benefit from a truly interoperable wireless communication architecture, based on their own assets: streetlight poles.

What’s next? Cities can generate revenues by connecting third party devices to the PE Smart Urban Network, or design new services leveraging data coming from connected sensors and objects. Ever heard of Singapore’s “lamppost as a platform” model?

PE Smart Urban Network enables present and future City applications, without any legacy or technological constraint. Let’s meet to discuss a customized business case for your City.
