DEx16 Expressway – Romania

DEx16 is a strategic expressway in Romania which runs around the city of Oradea.  Inaugurated in 2024, it connects relevant locations such as the Oradea International Airport and the University of Oradea, as well as the A3 highway towards Bucharest, the Transylvania region, and the Hungarian border.

Challenges

Reliable lighting is paramount on motorways to contribute to the safety of travelling people and vehicles. The LED luminaires manufacturer Electronic Interactiv was entrusted to design and implement the lighting infrastructure along DEx16, and wanted to provide a smart, innovative solution for a high-quality and energy-efficient illumination network.

Our solution

About 1,270 Smart Lighting Zhaga Nodes were integrated into Electronic Interactiv’s LED lamps and installed along the expressway. Luminaires are now connected wirelessly and transmit real-time data to the Central Management Software for accurate remote monitoring of operating conditions, triggering immediate alerts in case of failures or anomalies.

Lights are automatically switched on/off and dimmed according to pre-set patterns to offer the best quality of service and, at the same time, the minimal waste of unnecessary energy. Motion sensors have been integrated into some road sections.

Results

Dex16 is properly illuminated, granting an effective service to the many private vehicles and trucks that drive every day along the expressway. The combination of LED technologies and the Smart Lighting solution contained energy consumption, with notable benefits in terms of both costs and environmental impact.

Under normal circumstances, luminaires are off during daytime and switched on at 100% from dusk till dawn. Thanks to the integration of motion sensors, the light intensity is dynamically dimmed at 30% from midnight to 5am if no vehicle is passing, further reducing power consumption without compromising the overall service.

In case of road accidents or other emergency situations, lights can be dimmed to 100% in real time to support law enforcement or rescue services.
