Smart Environment

Climate Resilient Communities can make a positive impact when a city
is struck by harsh weather phenomena or is badly affected by climate changes.

City Challenges

With the world becoming more and more sensitive to climate change, the importance of environmental and weather monitoring is rocketing. Municipalities are pressured to measure air quality for different purposes, i.e. comply with regional/national regulations, safeguard public health by monitoring local communities’ exposure to pollution, assess the effectiveness of urban policies (pedestrian areas, ultra-low emission zones, temporary road closures, public transportation investments, etc.), control local emission sources (roads and railway corridors, industrial and construction sites, waste treatment plants, etc.).

Natural disasters are also increasing in frequency and intensity, affecting urban as well as rural areas, damaging buildings and infrastructures with high human and financial costs. Monitoring hyper-local environmental parameters has thus become a necessity for cities and rural areas, together with the need to alert residents in case of upcoming heat waves, snow or ice storms, or other unfortunate conditions.

Benefits of our Solution

Our Smart Environmental Sensors are integrated into our wireless network to collect data about temperature, humidity, rainfall, air pressure, wind direction, wind speed UV intensity and luminosity. Data are gathered on a Smart Central Management System (CMS) and can be analyzed in real time or within a certain period, to help local authorities take timely and effective decisions, especially when given set thresholds are reached. For instance, a peak in UV intensity, a rise in temperature and a low wind speed could alert local authorities of a heatwave particularly strong in a certain area of the city, alerting citizens to avoid that zone. By monitoring rainfall, wind speed and luminosity, the irrigation system of a city can also be altered and adjusted to avoid waste of water or to preserve the local vegetation.

Audio alarms or emergency lights mounted on street lampposts can also be triggered based on some environmental parameters to alert nearby people in case of emergency.

Our Solution in Detail

Our Smart Environmental Sensors are compact and can be easily mounted on streetlight poles, supported by the smart lighting infrastructure and network. The sensors monitor up to eight environmental parameters and send data to the Smart Central Management System (CMS). Data can be combined to get a more comprehensive view of the situation.

Smart Environmental Sensors are part of the IoT structure enabling cities to remotely manage multiple solutions: a series of other smart devices like smart cameras, pyranometers, flooding sensors, can also be connected to the IoT network and the CMS, in order to generate a full picture of different parameters and support informative and real-time decisions. For instance, in case of low solar irradiation levels detected by the sensors, city managers can plan for dimmed lights to increase luminosity.

Hardware security module and strong data encryption features ensure data protection, safe storage, and trusted network communication. Security features are available without additional cost.
