Smart Lighting

Smart Lighting represents the backbone of a smart city,
and can address the needs for energy efficiency and grid stability

City Challenges

Cities consume over 65% of the world’s energy and much of this energy is used for street and public lighting. With soaring energy prices and mounting pressure to reduce CO2 emissions, smart lighting represents the most effective solution to save power without compromising public safety and urban attractivity.

As street illumination is such an energy-intensive application, smart lighting stands out as a valid solution to also contribute to the stability of power grids. Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, storms, as well as heatwaves, are putting a lot of stress on the power grid, which in most cases is obsolete or unable to cope with peaks. Power outages are costly too and can easily escalate into the millions of dollars per hour of downtime (Source BloomEnergy).

The possibility to dynamically regulate streetlights and reduce energy consumption in peak times thus helps preventing power outages and disruptions affecting the urban population, as well as reducing recovery costs.

Benefits of our Solution

Our Smart Lighting Solution can be easily deployed and offers immediate benefits to city managers, utilities and residents.

City operators can define customized lighting patterns for single districts, streets and even single lamps: streetlights can be turned on/off and dimmed according to programmed schedules, changing them whenever necessary to mirror specific circumstances or events. Smart Lighting Nodes can be integrated with additional motion sensors, vehicle counters, tilt sensors and other devices, triggering condition-based dynamic lighting. This is particularly useful in low-traffic areas, for instance, where lights may be further dimmed when no vehicle or pedestrian is passing by. Energy consumption can thus be reduced based on real needs, without compromising safety.

The Smart Central Management System (CMS) allows for accurate remote monitoring of the status of light points, calling for specific maintenance actions in case of failures or abnormal power consumption, with the possibility to generate weekly, monthly, or annual reports.

Variations may be performed in real time. For instance, brightness can be maximized in case of a road accident to facilitate emergency aid and law enforcement intervention, or lowered if a hurricane or another extreme weather event requires the immediate reduction of power consumption to stabilize or relieve the grid.

Our Solution in Detail

Our Smart Lighting Solution allows for full remote control of connected streetlights, performing on/off and dimming functions, executing schedules and customized patterns, and triggering dynamic sensor-based lighting. It is based on a wireless mesh network which represents the backbone of a smart city, allowing other applications to be seamlessly added in the future.

We offer different types of smart lighting nodes for different types of lamps and drivers, from NEMA to Zhaga as well as internal nodes, on any LED/HID luminaire. Smart Gateways act as border routers, network coordinators and data concentrators. We also offer hybrid nodes, featuring an embedded gateway to create highly efficient, resilient, and adaptable Smart City Mesh Networks.

For street cabinet solutions, we have developed a Cabinet Communication Module that works in conjunction with street cabinet controllers and provides remote monitoring of the ON/OFF status and power consumption of streetlights connected to the cabinet.

Hardware security module and strong data encryption features ensure data protection, safe storage, and trusted network communication. Security features are available without additional cost.
